‘The Widening Gyre’ (red) // Reduction linocut print
My first reduction linocut print: ‘The Widening Gyre’. In reduction printmaking, you create a print with several layers of printing with the use of just one block. The linoleum is gradually cut away, and each new color is printed on top of the last. The image slowly emerges while the linoleum block is being destroyed. A reduction print can never be reprinted. The process is nerve-wracking – if you make a mistake in the last layer, you can’t go back.
I made an edition of 10 prints of two different color combinations on Somerset 300gsm paper, 27cm x 27cm. Swipe right to see the layers and close-ups.
